How I list events and who’s involved

Every event page shows who’s behind the event and what each person or group is doing there. I take all of this from the organizer’s own page, so if their listing doesn’t mention something, I leave it out too, and I never list the people who are just attending.

Where the roles come from

Each event says whose page it came from, the day I listed it and when I last checked or updated it. If mine and theirs don’t match, theirs is right, and I’ll update mine.

When I’m involved

If I’m connected to an event, like when I’m hosting it, sitting on the organizer’s board or working with a sponsor, I say so in its Who’s involved section. My name says “(that’s me)” after it, and when I’m connected through a group, a note names it.

All event details come from the organizer’s own page. Being listed doesn’t mean you or your employer endorse the event or this site.

Something wrong?

If you’re listed and something’s wrong, even just your name, or you’d rather not be listed at all, tell me. I’ll fix a mistake within 2 business days. If you’d rather not be listed, I’ll check it’s really you, then take your name off every event it’s on within 5 business days. Either way, I’ll do it before the event if it hasn’t happened yet. Search engines and saved calendars can take a little longer to catch up. Organizers, you’re welcome to send me your full line-up.

Who’s involved

Organizer
The group or person running the event. They handle registration and can change or cancel it, so ask them anything about signing up.
Co-organizers
Other groups or people putting on the event with the organizer. The organizer still handles registration.
Hosts
The people running things on the day, usually the ones who welcome you. An MC counts as a host. When a group is listed as “hosting”, I show it as an organizer, and a building that’s “hosting” is just the venue.
Speakers
People giving a talk, keynote or demo.
Moderators and panellists
Panellists are the people on a panel. The moderator asks the questions, on a panel or in a fireside chat.
Facilitators
People who run a workshop or other hands-on session.
On the program
People on the program when the organizer hasn’t said what they’re doing. If they’re called a judge or mentor, I say so beside their name.
Sponsors
Groups or people who paid for or gave something to the event: money, prizes, credits, a venue, food and drink, or swag. They sponsor the event, not this site. I list them in the organizer’s order, and say what they gave when the organizer does, but never amounts or levels like gold and platinum.
Community partners
Groups or people who support the event or help spread the word, like a media partner or a local group.
Exhibitors
Groups or people showing their work at a table, booth or demo station.

A role is only what someone’s doing at that event, not their job title or who they work for.

House rules

Where’s Anu is a calendar of tech events in Greater Victoria, run by one person. Everyone who signs in agrees to these rules, so the site stays useful and safe.

  1. Be yourself. Sign in with your own LinkedIn account. Don’t claim to be someone else, or to speak for a group you don’t belong to.
  2. No spam. Don’t send bulk or repeated messages, sales pitches or ads through Get in touch, Send Anu an event or any other form.
  3. Be respectful. No harassment, threats, slurs or personal attacks, toward anyone.
  4. Send real events. An event you send must be real, in Greater Victoria or online, about tech or close to it, with honest details.
  5. Respect privacy. Don’t share anyone’s personal information without their permission.
  6. No hacking. Don’t try to get around its limits, get into someone else’s account, or test its security without my written OK.

If an account breaks these rules, I may switch it off. I tell the person why, and they can still see, download and delete their data. They can write to me about it, and I reply within 10 business days. I look at every switch-off again within 12 months. What’s kept, and for how long, is on the privacy page.
